Homepage Checklist: The Essential Elements to Convert Visitors

This homepage checklist comes from a question I get asked a lot: “I already have a homepage, but I’m not sure if something is missing.” So here’s the practical version, item by item, to see if yours is doing its job or missing a key piece.

If you’ve read my article on the 5 questions your homepage should answer, think of this as part two: that one helped you think it through, this one gives you the concrete elements to check one by one.

What a converting homepage needs

A complete homepage checklist always starts from the same fixed points. If even one of these is missing, you’re probably losing visitors without realizing it.

1. A clear line above the fold. In the first seconds, whoever lands should understand who you are and what you do, without scrolling. Not a catchy slogan, a sentence that explains.

2. A subtitle that clarifies who you work with. Right after the headline, specify the niche. “Web design” alone isn’t enough, “web design for coaches and consultants” is.

3. A visible call to action right away. Nothing fancy needed, just a clear button like “See services” or “Book a call,” visible without scrolling.

4. Social proof. Even just one testimonial, a client logo, a number. It says “I’m not the only one who thinks so.”

5. A “how I work” or process section. People trust more when they know what to expect, not just what they’ll get at the end.

6. A hint of who you are, even without a photo. Two lines with personality are enough to make it feel like there’s a real person on the other side, not an anonymous company.

7. A second call to action near the bottom. Whoever scrolls that far is interested, give them an easy next step.

8. Internal links to key pages. Services, portfolio, about: the homepage should sort visitors, not be a dead end.

The most common homepage mistakes

Even with all the right elements, these details ruin everything:

  • Too much text before the call to action: if it takes three screens of scrolling to understand what you offer, you’ve already lost half your visitors.
  • Generic CTAs: “Contact me” says little, “Book a free consultation” says a lot more.
  • No visual hierarchy: if everything has the same size and weight, the eye doesn’t know where to look.
  • A homepage isolated from the rest of the site: if it doesn’t link to services, portfolio, or blog, it’s a dead end instead of a starting point.

I covered this in more depth in my article on a website that converts, not just looks good.

How to use this checklist

The most useful way is to open your homepage in another tab and check it item by item, with an honest eye. If two or three points are missing, it doesn’t mean starting from scratch: often adding one block or rewriting one line is enough to fill the gap.

A good homepage checklist isn’t just for “checking,” it gives you clear direction on what to fix first, instead of getting lost in endless tweaks that don’t actually change results.

If after going through it you realize your homepage needs more than a few touch-ups, it’s probably time to look at it as a whole, not just element by element.
