Do I Need a Blog on My Website? Here’s What I Learned

A few months ago I added a blog to my website with no big expectations. I wasn’t sure it would work, I didn’t know when I’d see results, and honestly I kept asking myself if it was worth the effort. Since I always get asked “Do I need a blog?” every time I propose adding one to a client’s website, I figured I’d give you an honest answer.

Do I Need a Blog or Is My Website Enough?

A lot of small business owners have a well-built website, a clear services page, maybe a solid about page and wonder if adding a blog actually changes anything. The answer? Well, depends on what you want to achieve.

A website without a blog can absolutely get traffic, but a blog multiplies the chances of someone finding you on Google without searching specifically for you. Every article is one more entry point: someone searches for an answer on Google, finds your post, and lands on your website, without you paying for ads or posting a story on Instagram.

So let me break it down for you.

The Real Benefits

Google visibility. Every article is one more indexed page, one more answer to what your potential clients are searching for. If you want to build traffic over time without relying on social media, a blog is one of the most effective tools you have.

You show expertise without pitching yourself. A well-written article shows how you think, how you work, what you know. It’s far more powerful than a services page alone.

Content that lasts. An article can bring traffic for months or years. I use my blog posts as the foundation for Pinterest, which has become my main source of organic traffic.

The Real Downsides

It requires consistency. A blog updated once every six months does nothing. Google rewards regularity. If you can’t commit to publishing at least twice a month, it’s better not to start.

Results take time. SEO works slowly, usually a few months before you see real movement. I started seeing impressions grow after a few weeks, but clicks take longer to come.

Writing well isn’t enough. You need to pick the right topics, optimize for keywords, and link articles together. It’s not complicated, but there’s a learning curve.

When You Need a Blog and When You Don’t

You need a blog if you already have an active, professional website, if you can publish consistently, and if you want to build organic traffic over the medium to long term.

You don’t need a blog if you’re chasing immediate results, if your website isn’t solid yet, or if the idea of writing regularly feels like too much of a burden. A blog is a tool, it only works if you use it the right way.

What I Learned After Months of Blogging

I chose topics my ideal clients are actually searching for, learned to optimize every article for SEO, and connected everything to Pinterest. I don’t have thousands of visitors, but traffic is growing, articles are getting indexed, and every week someone lands on my website through organic search without me doing anything that day.

That, for me, makes it worth the time.

So…Do I Need a Blog?

Yes, if you’re willing to treat it as a serious tool, not something you do when you feel like it. If you want your website to become more visible over time without depending entirely on social media, a blog is probably the most strategic move you can make.
